  • Phantom Black – Phantom Black (PIAS Recordings)

    Sektion: Highlights

• Guy Clarke – Boats To Build / Dublin Blues

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

    Image: 1599790

Texas-born Guy Clark is one of the great singer/songwriters and was a major influence on the new breed of country music artists arriving in Nashville in the 1980s.

Guy Clark’s home was an open house for impromptu sessions and a place for testing new songs with such artists as Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell and Steve Young.

Within these albums co-produced by Miles Wilkinson and Guy Clark from 1992 and 1995 are 20 of the artist’s finest recordings, an assessment agreed by both critics and Clark enthusiasts alike.

Here, fine studio musicianship, perfectly accompanies, but never overcrowds, the vocals, perhaps hard to believe with such a strong ensemble on board, which also reveals the high esteem to which Clark is held.

Verlon Thompson, Kenny Malone, Darrell Scott, Travis Clark, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas among those lending their instrumental skills. Suzi Ragsdale (the daughter of Ray Stevens) provides impeccable harmonies and guests Nanci Griffith, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Kathy Mattea, Bill Lloyd & Radney Foster and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott can be heard adding their voices to various tracks.

"This coupling of two great albums on one CD is available for the first time". Erhältlich ab 27.11.2015 Getaggt mit:

    Artist Biography (AllMusic)

In 1977 Pablo Gad was introduced to Joe Sinclair by his benefactor Winston Fergus. Sinclair had set up the Klik label following his departure from Trojan Records with a view to releasing authentic Jamaican sounds. Both Fergus and Gad were British-based but were able to maintain an appeal within the roots market. Fergus was the lead singer of the Equators who provided the backing to Gad’s debut recordings. Surfacing on the Caribbean subsidiary, ‘International Dread’ and ‘Kunte Kinte’ enhanced his position as a top vocalist. In 1978 Gad emerged with the classic ‘Blood Suckers’, which surfaced through Clement Bushay’s Burning Sounds empire. From the opening bars this rhythm was destined to last, and was enhanced by Gad’s vocals, with his delivery reminiscent of Fred Locks. Further singles surfaced through Bushay, including ‘Natty Loving’, ‘Trafalgar Square’, ‘Throw Your Dreams’ and ‘Riddle I Dis’. The success of ‘Blood Suckers’ overshadowed his later output, which probably inspired the revival of the rhythm for ‘Hard Time’. The outcome was another smash hit that has become an anthem for revival DJs. 1980 was a prolific year when a successful run of hits encompassed ‘Guns Fever’, ‘Nursery Rhyme’, ‘Oh Jah’ and ‘Fly Away Home’. Pablo Gad continued to record in the 90s, including the self-penned ‘Johnny Reggae’ and the haunting ‘Lash On My Back’, the latter being featured on the Brixton-based Lion Roots compilation.

  • Moulettes – Constellations (180 Gr.)

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Image: 1589765 The Moulettes return with their third studio album, and their first for Navigator Records, 'Constellations' on June 2nd. The album features a host of guest performances from legends Arthur Brown ("God Of Hellfire"), Herbie Flowers (Lou Reed/David Bowie) and contemporaries Blaine Harrison (Mystery Jets), The Unthanks and Emma Richardson (Band Of Skulls). Brighton dub troubadour Faye Richardson and dubstep producer Dface complete a supporting cast that emphasises the band's desire to blend musical styles and experiment with sound in a way that has been a hallmark of their recordings to date. Thus 'Constellations' crosses varied and expansive musical territory over its ten tracks. As founding member Ollie Austin notes, "People can listen to Moulettes and hear Shostakovich, Miles Davis, Pentangle, Pink Floyd, Bjork and Skrillex. That is where we've all come from ... everyone shares in over 80 years of recorded music history".

'Constellations' contains the headrush pop folk of 'Glorious Year', the psycho-drama of the title track and the noir trip hop of 'Lady Vengeance' in an opening salvo that is unlikely to be matched in scope by many, if any, albums released this year. An album criss-crossed with stories and imagery, 'Constellations' can accommodate the 20's belle époque waltz of 'The Night Is Young', the progressive folk of 'The Observatory' and the death disco dub of album closer 'Keep It As A Memory' whilst remaining a cohesive piece that sparkles with inventiveness and creativity throughout.

Few bands have the scope of The Moulettes. Containing classically trained members who have played alongside the likes of Mick Jagger, Nick Cave, Seasick Steve, Bonobo and Dave Gilmour, their significant initial period was spent playing live and promoting the Den Of Iniquity nights in London that brought a host of acts to public prominence. After seven years of being a live band it was only in 2009 that their eponymous debut was released. This was followed in 2011 by 'The Bear's Revenge', an album that saw MOJO hail them as "complex and beautiful…intriguing and unique".

"Frontrunners of the new British acoustic scene thanks to their sophisticated, unpredictable approach" - Robin Denselow, The Guardian
"... song writing of rare depth and inventiveness..." - Songlines
"This delicious music is played with acoustic virtuosity ... Complex and beautiful…Intriguing and unique" -MOJO
"Divine harmonies…Orchestral folk at its very finest." - Time Out
"... a cross between Pentangle and the Kronos Quartet, by way of Kate Bush and early Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett." - Reuters.
