Image: 1652082 House and Land (Guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Sarah Louise and fiddler/banjoist Sally Anne Morgan) is a North Carolina based duo whoseguitar, fiddle and banjo abilities transform traditional folk forms from thefamiliar to the strikingly fresh. Their gorgeous sophomore album Across The Field is a work of bold artistry, drawing connections between thetraditional and psychedelic through dexterous improvisation anddeep appreciation of the living culture of their songs. Their feministinterpretations of lyrics reflective of another time and attitude is bothempowering and illustrative. Identifying with many songs’ message of close relationship with the land and principles of stewardship, the duo’semotional connection is palpable in their hauntingly beautiful vocalharmonies.A keen understanding of the traditional source material House andLand pulls from allows the duo the freedom to experiment. Instead of seeing old, even ancient material as limiting, they use the living songsas compositional canvases to paint rich new tapestries and tell modernversions of timeless stories. The history of each song on Across The Field spans far beyond Louiseand Morgan’s own lifetimes, yet they still strike to the quick of what it means to be a human in the world. During the duo’s travels since therelease of debut House and Land in 2016 they have met and playedwith the likes of British folk heroes Shirley Collins, Carole Pegg, and French hurdy gurdy master Emmanuelle Parrenin. These brief encountersserved to reinvigorate the duo and reinforced the importance of usingsongs to connect people to the land and to the continuity of humanculture. On Across The Field, House and Land have taken up the mantelof their elders with reverence and care, weaving fresh, resplendent, contemporary tales from disparate threads of the past.

Image: 1611687 Gill Landry kündigt sein neues Album ‘Love Rides A Dark Horse’ an.

Landry sagt selbst zum Schaffensprozess: “In writing this album, I wanted to paint a vision of the prison of expectations that eat loving relationships at their core and can turn them into a mechanical farce. (…) The songs reveal characters trapped in scenes they didn’t create as much as rehearsed. (…) They find themselves disappointed with the reality of relationships due to their false idealizations. Love becomes a possession rather than a presence. This isn’t to say I don’t think that there aren’t millions of people living in harmonious, real, and loving relationships. I don’t happen to know an overwhelming amount of them, but I know they exist.”

Gill Landry überzeugt mit starken Folksongs, Dylan-inspiriertem Folkrock & atmosphärischem Americana! Mit seiner Band Old Crow Medicine Show und dem Album “Remedy” erhielt er 2015 bereits einen Grammy für das beste Folk-Album!

  • Erja Lyytinen – Another World (LP/180g)

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Image: 1624141 The best musicians are masters of reinvention. Bob Dylan’s electric revolution at Newport Folk Festival. Radiohead’s bold rebirth with Kid A. Robert Plant’s fearless escape from the shadow of Led Zeppelin. To that list of trailblazers and rulebreakers, add Erja Lyytinen. For seventeen years, we’ve known her as the award-winning slide goddess whose heart-and-guts songs have shaken the blues-rock scene. But as the Finnish bandleader confirms with latest album Another World, we’ve only scratched the surface. “The album title is the idea of stepping into a new territory, musically and spiritually,” she explains. “Walking towards a new land of musical ideas, not being afraid to express myself. This album is open-minded, curious and empowering.”

In a cynical world where manufactured bands stick to the formula, Lyytinen has always broken through the boundaries of genre. This is an artist capable of flowing from the primal blues of international debut Pilgrimage (2005), to the orchestration of Voracious Love (2010) and the soulful Elmore James tributes of The Sky Is Crying (2014). But following the shattering breakup that fuelled Stolen Hearts (2017), Lyytinen found herself tearing out the page and writing a new chapter. “While Stolen Hearts was made during tough times,” she reflects, “Another World is like spring, bringing in new fresh life and hope. The whole album is rockier and funkier, with elements of blues, pop, hard-rock, prog-rock – one song even has an Irish vibe.”

Written, recorded, mixed and mastered across the planet by the greatest sonic architects on the modern scene, Another World feels like an album in motion. The songs passed through iconic locations including Gavin Lurssen’s Grammy-winning Lurssen Mastering in LA, while the thrilling mix was crafted by Austin, Texas legend Chris Bell, who recognised Lyytinen as a talent to match up to A-list clients like The Eagles, Erykah Badu and Eric Johnson. But Lyytinen’s soaring vocals and fire-in-fingers slide work mean these songs always feel like one vision, even with the tracklisting running the gamut of genres and moods. Snake In The Grass lays biting riffs on a stop-start groove, Lyytinen cutting heads with Michael Jackson’s favourite shredder, Jennifer Batten, on a harmony solo that “becomes a guitar battle”.

The title track weaves lyrical themes of survival, space exploration and divided lovers, its dreamy soundscape decorated with swooping harmonies and a virtuoso wah solo that races by like a comet. Hard As Stone is inspired by Lyytinen’s recent onstage cameo with the mighty Carlos Santana, tipping a hat to the Latin legend with its pulsing double-time percussion. “The song itself,” she explains, “tells about an oversensitive person having a hard time living in an otherwise loud society.”
Wedding Day takes a wry look at a romance-gone-wrong, Lyytinen and star guest Sonny Landreth stoking the song’s engine with shots of slide guitar. Miracle is a slow-burn beauty, the bandleader’s solo first played long and languid, then building to dizzy velocity. “My biggest achievement has definitely been the birth of my twins,” Lyytinen explains. “So I tried to emulate the sound of babies crying with the guitar by using swelling with the tremolo bar, something Jeff Beck does a lot.”

There’s more to the glistening Torn than meets the eye: this album standout takes an influence from Sting with its tempo-shifting chorus, offers a Celtic vibe with Lyytinen’s first recorded foray on violin and offers a hand up to anyone left bloodied but unbowed by a bad relationship. “I see the story’s character standing on a battlefield,” she explains, “having survived the battle, wounded here and there, but picking up her shield, dusting it off and lifting her face towards the rising sun.”

Yet there are always more battles to come. Lyytinen sings with disarming honesty on Break My Heart Gently: a bruised ballad that will chime with anyone who’s endured the wrench of a breakup (“Break my heart gently,” she pleads, “if someone else is what you want”). And for anyone who missed recent single Without You, the digital album includes this bitter-sweet song as a bonus track, its choppy urban-soul groove setting up a stark guitar break that releases the tension. “It’s about a person,” she says, “who’s searching for a feeling she had with someone who’s no longer available. It’s dealing with the phenomenon of how the human mind obsesses about something or someone that is out of a person’s reach.”
But Another World isn’t an album that dwells on the past. This record is the freshest of starts, drawing a line in the sand under Erja Lyytinen’s stellar career so far and announcing that the next chapter will be truly unmissable. “This album is about deep stories, emotions and feelings after a breakup,” she says. “Going towards something new, discovering the new, and being courageous and naturally interested in the future. So take a step into Another World with me…”

  • Nick Waterhouse – Nick Waterhouse (180g LP+MP3)

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Image: 1623099 Nick Waterhouse grew up in a coastal town near Long Beach, CA. It was a serene setting: the ocean stretching out for miles to the North and South, manicured lawns, two-story homes, long swathes of concrete highway, fast food chains and mega malls. He was there for two decades. Then, he left. He found a home in his early 20s in San Francisco, working at record stores alongside a collective of likeminded young crate-diggers and 45 collectors. And then he started making his own records: “Time’s All Gone” in 2012, “Holly” in 2014, and “Never Twice” in 2016. These were evocative albums, steeped in a perfectionism and clarity of vision that informed every choice, from the studios to the players, the arrangements to the album art. Everything, deliberately designed and purposeful, bubbling over with power and feeling. And as those records rolled out into the world, Waterhouse found a dedicated audience of his own as well as a bevy of influential champions and collaborators, including garage-rock mystic Ty Segall, retro-futurist R&B bandleader Leon Bridges and the LA-based quartet Allah-Las, whose first two albums he meticulously produced and played on. There is a “Waterhouse Sound” and it comes from both the man and the method — recording everything on magnetic tape, through analog equipment, and playing live (!), eyeball to eyeball, whenever possible. Now, he’s finished his fourth album. He’s calling it “Nick Waterhouse.” And whether intentional or not, it is perhaps his most reflective — and reflexive — album, employing all of the mature production techniques learned throughout his professional career while retaining a viscous edge that allows it to land with colossal impact — more raw, heavy and overtly confrontational than anything he’s made before. “Nick Waterhouse” was recorded at the finest working studio in Los Angeles, Electro Vox Recorders, and co-produced by Paul Butler (The Bees, Michael Kiwanuka, Devendra Banhart), the master of all things warm, rich and wooly. Nick’s songs here are personal, but personal in the way that “Please Mr. Postman,” “What’s Going On” and “Cathy’s Clown” are — intimate, direct, yet still malleable enough for listeners to suffuse their own life stories into the mix. The album is thick with talented players, including Andres Rentaria, Paula Henderson and the staggering, howling saxophone of Mando Dorame. All of the new Waterhouse songs sound big. Brawny and muscular. The lyrics are suspicious, outraged and, at times, very vulnerable (muscle is just flesh, after all). Waterhouse uses an economy of words to deliver complex, coded messages. He offers up equal parts criticism of the time we live in and innate human flaws. He paints relationships under the cover of darkness, slashing through neo-noir fantasies that are romantic, blood-spattered and bracingly aware of the powerlessness felt among people, amid the rapid onslaught of commercialism and technological progress. And, as has become his signature, he throws in a tune written by a close friend. On this record, he covers “I Feel an Urge Coming On” in tribute to the song’s author, Nick’s own mentor and collaborator Joshie Jo Armstead, who wrote music with Ray Charles and sang as both an Ikette and Raelette in the ’60s and ’70s. He’s four albums in, but it makes sense that this specific record is the one that takes his name. You can really here Nick on this one. Not just the band. Not just the songs. Not just the sound. HIM. You can hear his mind at work. His passion. His focus. More importantly, you can feel it.

  • Elena Setien – Another Kind Of Revolution (LP+MP3)

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Image: 1623000 Elena Setién is an artist defined by her vivid songwriting and nuanced compositions. Her music exudes the bold individualism and sense of empathy associated with her homeland of Spain’s Basque region. Her careful arrangements are direct and affecting and give her room for forays into experimentation. Setién is a skilled multi-instrumentalist and performed nearly every part on the record save for a few select guitar parts by Steve Gunn . While Elena’s recordings are decidedly pop, she has considerable experience as an improviser. Another Kind Of Revolution , Elena Setién’s Thrill Jockey debut, is a work of entrancing, effortless beauty. Setién grew up during a period of political upheaval in Spain, in the Basque region. The turmoil of the post-dictatorship period of the 1980s and the intensive civic actions left her with a sense of duty to fight for progress. Her lyrics throughout Another Kind Of Revolution describe the beauty of everyday life, nature, and promote the forces of change not as a burden, but as the very source of hope to draw from. Another Kind Of Revolution tells its stories through an expansive sonic palette. Pianos and Wurlitzer take on various timbres for each song, trickling in and out of the foreground with Setién’s distinguished voice gently gliding overtop. Careful attention to specific recording techniques and allowing for the slight imperfections in the instruments and amplifiers, bring a depth to the recordings that is both direct and organic. Elena Setién’s work is elemental and bold. Her music bends simple, familiar sounds and compositional forms into thoroughly unique songs. With Another Kind Of Revolution , Elena Setién continues to defy convention with songs as gorgeous as they are auspicious.

  • Larry Jon Wilson – New Beginnings

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Larry Jon Wilson came to the party late. When he arrived in Nashville, country soul pioneer Tony Joe White had already made six albums. Townes Van Zandt had made seven, Mickey Newbury eight. Kristofferson, the accepted High Priest of the New Nashville, had made five. Larry Jon, by the time he arrived, had spent ten years in corporate America.

He did not start playing guitar until the age of 30, but five years later he released his debut, New Beginnings (1975) and followed it just a year later with Let Me Sing My Song To You, both on Monument Records. A revelation among the hipsters and critics of Nashville, the LPs ensured Larry Jon was immediately embraced as part of the mid-70s “outlaw country movement” that eschewed slick production in favour of a raw, gritty approach. When a film crew came to document this burgeoning sound, they made straight for Larry Jon's door. The legendary Heartworn Highways (1981) featured his mesmerising performance of “Ohoopee River Bottomland”, a boogaloo funk monster.

He was a singer and writer of intensely private, painfully moving tales of southern life. With his deep, papa-bear voice, funky southern groove, and richly evocative narratives of rural Georgia, Larry Jon was a unique stylist but his gutsy, greasy sound did not translate into sales. Too funky for the country crowd, too heartfelt for pop radio, he fell between the cracks. We hope the long-overdue reissue of his first two albums will go some way to rectifying this. Indeed, both New Beginnings and Let Me Sing My Song to You - so similar they play like two halves of a double album – showcase his unique mix of country, folk, soul and swampy blues.

Driven by a crack rhythm section that included Elvis guitarist Reggie Young, New Beginnings is a rich, literate record. Anyone with even a passing interest in the union between soul and country music will be able to tell they’ve located solid gold as soon as Larry Jon’s deep baritone utters the first appreciative “mm-hmm” a few bars into the opening ‘Ohoopee River Bottomland’, a fat-bottomed swamp-funk account of hard times in the city and country alike. Funny, nostalgic, sad, wistful, righteously pissed-off: New Beginnings is country-influenced American songwriting at its finest, from the feverish country-got-soul groove pulsating behind the weary sigh of “Through The Eyes of Children” to the elemental lament “Things Ain’t What It Used to Be (and Probably Never Was)”, a country standard that somehow got away, Wilson’s compelling presence and rich voice keeping saccharine and self-pity at bay at all times.

The audio for New Beginnings comes from the original analogue tape transfers and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the striking cover art and we were honoured when Larry’s close friend Jeb Loy Nichols kindly agreed to contribute wonderfully unique liner notes, presented beautifully on the printed inner sleeve opposite a gorgeous black and white shot of Larry, mid-performance.

REMASTERED FROM ORIGINAL TAPE TRANSFERS, CAREFULLY REPRODUCED ORIGINAL ART, STRICTLY LIMITED TO 500 COPIES WORLDWIDE – NO REPRESS

“Larry Jon Wilson? He can break your heart with a voice like a cannonball.” - Kris Kristofferson.
