• Gill Landry – Love Rides A Dark Horse

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Image: 1611687 Gill Landry kündigt sein neues Album ‘Love Rides A Dark Horse’ an.

Landry sagt selbst zum Schaffensprozess: “In writing this album, I wanted to paint a vision of the prison of expectations that eat loving relationships at their core and can turn them into a mechanical farce. (…) The songs reveal characters trapped in scenes they didn’t create as much as rehearsed. (…) They find themselves disappointed with the reality of relationships due to their false idealizations. Love becomes a possession rather than a presence. This isn’t to say I don’t think that there aren’t millions of people living in harmonious, real, and loving relationships. I don’t happen to know an overwhelming amount of them, but I know they exist.”

Gill Landry überzeugt mit starken Folksongs, Dylan-inspiriertem Folkrock & atmosphärischem Americana! Mit seiner Band Old Crow Medicine Show und dem Album “Remedy” erhielt er 2015 bereits einen Grammy für das beste Folk-Album!

  • Larry Jon Wilson – New Beginnings

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Larry Jon Wilson came to the party late. When he arrived in Nashville, country soul pioneer Tony Joe White had already made six albums. Townes Van Zandt had made seven, Mickey Newbury eight. Kristofferson, the accepted High Priest of the New Nashville, had made five. Larry Jon, by the time he arrived, had spent ten years in corporate America.

He did not start playing guitar until the age of 30, but five years later he released his debut, New Beginnings (1975) and followed it just a year later with Let Me Sing My Song To You, both on Monument Records. A revelation among the hipsters and critics of Nashville, the LPs ensured Larry Jon was immediately embraced as part of the mid-70s “outlaw country movement” that eschewed slick production in favour of a raw, gritty approach. When a film crew came to document this burgeoning sound, they made straight for Larry Jon's door. The legendary Heartworn Highways (1981) featured his mesmerising performance of “Ohoopee River Bottomland”, a boogaloo funk monster.

He was a singer and writer of intensely private, painfully moving tales of southern life. With his deep, papa-bear voice, funky southern groove, and richly evocative narratives of rural Georgia, Larry Jon was a unique stylist but his gutsy, greasy sound did not translate into sales. Too funky for the country crowd, too heartfelt for pop radio, he fell between the cracks. We hope the long-overdue reissue of his first two albums will go some way to rectifying this. Indeed, both New Beginnings and Let Me Sing My Song to You - so similar they play like two halves of a double album – showcase his unique mix of country, folk, soul and swampy blues.

Driven by a crack rhythm section that included Elvis guitarist Reggie Young, New Beginnings is a rich, literate record. Anyone with even a passing interest in the union between soul and country music will be able to tell they’ve located solid gold as soon as Larry Jon’s deep baritone utters the first appreciative “mm-hmm” a few bars into the opening ‘Ohoopee River Bottomland’, a fat-bottomed swamp-funk account of hard times in the city and country alike. Funny, nostalgic, sad, wistful, righteously pissed-off: New Beginnings is country-influenced American songwriting at its finest, from the feverish country-got-soul groove pulsating behind the weary sigh of “Through The Eyes of Children” to the elemental lament “Things Ain’t What It Used to Be (and Probably Never Was)”, a country standard that somehow got away, Wilson’s compelling presence and rich voice keeping saccharine and self-pity at bay at all times.

The audio for New Beginnings comes from the original analogue tape transfers and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the striking cover art and we were honoured when Larry’s close friend Jeb Loy Nichols kindly agreed to contribute wonderfully unique liner notes, presented beautifully on the printed inner sleeve opposite a gorgeous black and white shot of Larry, mid-performance.

REMASTERED FROM ORIGINAL TAPE TRANSFERS, CAREFULLY REPRODUCED ORIGINAL ART, STRICTLY LIMITED TO 500 COPIES WORLDWIDE – NO REPRESS

“Larry Jon Wilson? He can break your heart with a voice like a cannonball.” - Kris Kristofferson.

  • Alan Hawkshaw & Brian Bennett – Full Circle

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Be With has worked with the hallowed KPM to re-issue ten of our favourites from across the KPM 1000 Series and the Themes International Music catalogue, currently under KPM stewardship.

Whether it’s killer soul-funk, sweet jazz-samba, skuzzed-up guitars or accidental Balearic beauty, these records include some of the most innovative work from some of the most talented composers and musicians of the 20th century.

These records were never readily available, being originally released as a ready-made, affordable alternative to commissioning music for television and radio. Consequentially the originals have been unobtainable for decades by all but the most dedicated collectors.

The audio for all ten re-issues comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM’s brand identity. And don’t worry! Those KPM stickers aren’t stuck directly on the sleeves!

But we didn’t just get a bit giddy and find ourselves re-issuing classic work from Alan Parker, Alan Hawkshaw, Brian Bennett, Nick Ingman, James Clarke, Francis Coppieters, Keith Mansfield, David Snell and John Fiddy. In the middle of the project KPM also asked Be With to be responsible for the vinyl version of Full Circle, an entire LP of new material from Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett. Who were we to refuse.

So that makes eleven records in total, all released on the 16th of November, and available for pre-order ordering now...

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Released in 1976, Distinctive Themes / Race To Achievement is legendary arranger Nick Ingman exploring the two distinct ideas of “impressive themes varying in style from ‘Basie to Elgar’” and “a study in the pressure and rewards of achievement”.

Distinctive Themes is a veritable indulgence of variously-tempoed, full orchestra, big band workouts, from relaxed swing to more propulsive themes. The progressively building “Expanding Markets” is a true highlight, with its rolling pianos, contemplative electric guitar solos and moody horns over skipping beats. The dramatic “Against The Odds” is another stand-out.

Race To Achievement is all rugged funk with stabbing chords and strutting horns and it’s probably our favourite side. Of course we have to acknowledge the fantastic “Tense Preparation”, sampled by Prince Paul and Dan The Automator for Handsome Boy Modeling School’s seminal “Magnetizing” with Del Tha Funky Homosapien. But the whole side’s range from tense underscores to fast and punchy chase themes makes this is a gem of the KPM catalogue.

As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Distinctive Themes / Race To Achievement comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM’s brand identity.

  • Alexander Tucker – Don’t Look Away (LP+MP3)

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Image: 1619792 Don’t Look Away is Alexander Tucker’s third album with Thrill Jockey,
completing what Tucker views as the fnal piece to a trilogy that began
with Dorwytch (2011) and Third Mouth (2012). His music brings a distinct
otherworldliness, bringing the listener beyond the confnes of the physical
world, and, much like the album cover alludes to, collages together
sound that both brings you outside the atmosphere whilst simultaniously
connecting you more closely to the seeds of existence. It is in this direction
that Tucker continues to carve a position as one of Britian’s most forwardthinking songwriters.
Recorded over an extended period in London and mixed inDaniel O’Sullivan’s
Dream Lion Studio, Don’t Look Away emerged during a particularly prolifc
creative period for Tucker. The album fnally came together while Tucker
was in Zürich composing for the Schauspielhaus Zürich, and while he was
establishing UNDIMENSIONED, his own publishing imprint as an active
member of London’s wildly creative independent comic scene. As a result,
Tucker’s wider work feels more present here than on previous recordings
and this shows itself often in the lyrics, which range from relationships,
including the uncomfortable ones we often have with ourselves, to sci-f
    imagery and cosmic horror.
The musical landscape of Don’t Look Away is illustrated on the cover’s hand
cut collage, created by Alexander Tucker. Viewing each aspect of his artistic
output, be it visual art, comics or music, less as separate disciplines but
more of as part of one connected whole – Tucker studied at the Slade School
of Fine Art and has always drawn comparison between the layering of paint
and the layering of sound – he explains: “The worlds I evoke through sound

  • Brother JT – Tornado Juice (LP+MP3)

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Image: 1617614 Brother JT, aka the enigmatic John Terlesky, has returned with a mind-palace of an
album entitled Tornado Juice. The album was recorded at Magic Door, a new studio
in Montclair NJ, by Ray Ketchem, who produced the Original Sins’ Bethlehem album
in 1996. This was a departure for the Brother, who hadn’t darkened the door of a
real studio since 2007’s Jelly Roll Gospel, preferring the freedom of recording at
his band’s practice space and overdubbing at home. True to form, however, after
recording the main band parts JT took the fles home and overdubbed vocals and
guitar leads to his heart’s content onto his refurbished Dell laptop. “I wouldn’t want
to put anyone through that kind of obsessiveness, much less a friend. And I wanted
to put my little stamp of grime on it.”
A prolifc writer, often inspired by the titular Tornado Juice (that’s LSD, kids), JT
records on average 40 songs a year before narrowing the selection for an album.
Often, it is the lyrics that come frst, fast and furious – excerpts from one of JT’s many
notebooks can be seen on the LP inner sleeve. “It could just be my subconscious
going off, but these sessions really feel like a form of spirit channeling. I hear voices,
all kinds of voices, and basically take down what they say. It might seem odd, but I
feel like I’m giving these beings some kind of outlet. It’s like having a collaborator,
say, Bernie Taupin, only from another dimension and much scarier.”
From the raw material of those pages the artist then honed the more decipherable
passages into song lyrics, drawing musically from a bottomless well of in?uences:
gutbucket blues to power pop, classic rock to garage-psych, even modern sources.
A guitarist inspired by the ‘rudimentary guys’ or more specifcally Lou Reed, Ron
Asheton and Bo Diddley, JT plays a pelham blue Epiphone SG with an alnico
whammy bar through a Blackstar Stage 40. Some favorite pedals for this intrepid
psychonaut are Halifax wah-wah and Boss distortion and sometimes Roland RE-20
echo. While critics have referred to his playing as “miraculously distorted guitar…
that’ll rip your mind to shreds” *, JT demurs “I don’t really enjoy playing guitar. I’d
much rather be just a singer, like Mick Jagger or Tom Jones, but I just don’t have the
hips for it. And plus, who’d play guitar?”

Brother JT is Central, PA’s John Terlesky who since the early
90’s has been exploring experimental and psychedelic rock
music with releases on labels such as Drag City, Drunken
Fish, Siltbreeze, and Birdman. Terlesky’s songwriting and
ample guitar skills take a decidedly psychedelic form but
never deviate too far from the classic song structure
On his second album for Thrill Jockey, JT blends his off-kilter
wit with a sincere darkness that brings a human vulnerability
    to the impenetrable humor
LP version pressed on black virgin vinyl with artworked
inner sleeve featuring artwork from JT’s notebook and free
    download card
Full press and marketing campaign being run from TJHQ.
Album unboxing video and album trailer will be serviced
Brother JT founded the garage pop band The Original Sins in
1987 and went on to release 10 albums (some with Bar/None)
“Loosening up your head where the electric JT warrior takes
on the world….and rides the Marshall stack skronk like a
    mechanical monster swan.” – Impose
“Brother JT sounds like a nervous Pentecostal preacher
screaming atop a warped copy of Easter Everywhere from
the 13th Floor Elevators.” – Philadelphia City Paper
“If you don’t like any of the quirky and off-kilter sounds
Brother JT produces… you, my friend, are legally deceased.”
