• Allah-Las – Worship The Sun (Gatefold+MP3)

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Image: 1591185 Worship The Sun is an apt title for the second album from the LA-based group Allah-Las, the follow-up to their self-titled
    2012 debut.
When The Distillery, the all-analogue studio in which their eponymous debut album was recorded closed its doors for the
final time, Los Angeles’ Allah-Las could easily have forgone their sound and turned to a non-descript location to record
their follow up. Yet Worship The Sun is a continuation in the band’s authentic West Coast vibe – staying true to their homegrown
dwellings it was laid down in numerous locations across LA.
“We’ve had great experiences touring, we've been influenced by new environments and we’re always digging for new
records, books, art and inspiration but there’s always a bit of anxiety as well,” tells drummer Matthew Correia. “We’ve
skirted the law a few times, gotten out of some tight situations and luckily emerged unscathed, touring has given us a real
    appreciation for time at home.”
Worship The Sun is exciting and evocative, revealing the maturity of a band no longer starting out but working at the top of
their game. If you’ve been waiting for more of that warm hazy sunshine goodness, well brace yourself for warmer climates,
the outlook is good and it goes to show that you can take the band out of LA but can’t take LA out of Allah-Las.

Released on Innovative Leisure, the LA label home to Hanni El Khatib, Nick Waterhouse, Classixx and Rhye.

Recommended for fans of: Temples, Mac DeMarco, War on Drugs, Black Angels, Kurt Vile, The Animals, The Byrds, Love

  • Black Plus – All My Relations

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Image: 1578742 Black Pus is Brian Chippendale, who rose to prominence as the drummer of noise rock titans Lightning Bolt and Mindflayer. The first Black Pus CD-R was self released in early 2006, and was a collection of ferocious free jazz, multi-tracked on Chippendale’s cassette fourtrack. Enamored of the control of recording solo, Chippendale followed with more CD-Rs, and began playing live under the Black Pus moniker. He refined the Black Pus sound over numerous selfreleased CDs and 2011’s Primordial Pus on Load Records, replacing the saxophone with a drum-mounted oscillator and experimenting with pop structures. The oscillator creates gigantic bass tones that are then fed through a series of pedals. Over the course of the past several years Chippendale has been hand-picked by Björk and The Flaming Lips as a collaborator, and recruited by Andrew W.K. for Lee “Scratch” Perry’s 2008 album Repentance.
All My Relations is constant forward motion and audible physicality. Chippendale’s furious drumming style is ever present and instantly recognizable, but the pop element, which Chippendale explored in more contained ways on earlier Black Pus releases, is more fully integrated. Tracks like “1000 Years” and “Hear No Evil” bear a snarl and a smile, the sound of wild abandon that is both aggressive and
inviting. Chippendale creates maximalist music out of the simple elements of drums, vocals, and an oscillator triggered by the kick drum, looping and repeating phrases and rhythms in a way that can
only be called meditative. The album closes with “A Better Man,” an almost ten minute epic that expertly alternates between the minimal pulse of the kick drum and oscillator and some of the most voracious and unrestrained drumming on the album.
For the first time with any group he’s been a part of, Chippendale fully embraced the studio to realize All My Relations. He entrusted recording and producing to Keith Souza and Seth Manchester (who have worked with The Body, Battles and The Skull Defekts) at Machines with Magnets in Pawtucket, RI. All My Relations retains the expansive, primal sound of Chippendale’s earlier recordings, enhanced by the clarity of the studio. Black Pus has attained vicious transcendence.

    SALES POINTS
Black Pus is the solo project of Brian Chippendale of noise rock titans Lightning Bolt and Mindflayer.

In addition to his work in both Lightning Bolt and Mindflayer Chippendale has collaborated with Björk, The Flaming Lips, Boredoms, Andrew W.K. and Lee “Scratch” Perry Chippendale is also a renowned visual artist (his artwork adorns All My Relations) and was a founder of the legendary Providence, RI warehouse/venue/arts space Fort Thunder

  • Guardian Alien – See The World Given To A One Love Entity

    Sektion: Musik, Neue Releases

Image: 1574289 Guardian Alien is a free wheeling ensemble coming into its own, having found just the right balance between structured arrangements and wild abandon. Helmed by Greg Fox, who has lent his percussive force to the likes of Teeth Mountain, Dan Deacon, and Liturgy, the ensemble was initially an extension of his solo music (GDFX). It rapidly took on its own identity and expanded to a core group of Greg (drums, vocals, electronics, arrangements), Alex Drewchin (vocals, synth), Turner Williams Jr. (shahai baaja), Bernard Gann (guitar and also of Liturgy), and Eli Winograd (bass), all of whom have lent their expansive talents to numerous other projects.
Guardian Alien’s Thrill Jockey debut, See the World Given to a One Love Entity, is a 40 minute psychic/psychedelic meditation that is driven by an intensity that is at once expansive, focused, and heavy on multiple levels. The overall arc of the album is transportive and trance inducing. The cover artwork painted by Turner Williams is based on a specific and particularly weird experience of Greg’s. It mirrors the music in its open-ended playfulness and true psychedelia.
To say that the music of Guardian Alien is also meant to be an experience is an understatement. According to Greg, See the World Given to a One Love Entity is about opening the heart, healing, forgiveness, and visualizing and manifesting a new global compassion. Guardian Alien was very much born of the live performance so it is fitting that their first fully conceived album was recorded at Shea Stadium, the band’s spiritual home, which is run by Greg’s cousin Adam. It was mastered by Heba Kadry at the Lodge (Wooden Shjips, Eternal Tapestry). See the World Given to a One Love Entity is a single composition with a strong, singular vision. It is the culmination of a band coalescing as a group while heedlessly delving into the depths of the psyche driven by their core desire to expand their horizons, both musical and otherwise.

    SALES POINTS
Guardian Alien is a Brooklyn based group led by drummer Greg Fox (Teeth Mountain, Dan Deacon, Man Forever, Liturgy, GDFX) and features Alex Drewchin, Bernard Gann (Liturgy), Turner Williams Jr., and Eli Winograd
Greg Fox was voted New York’s best drummer of 2011 by The Village Voice
See the World Given to a One Love Entity was mastered by Heba Kadry at The Lodge (Wooden Shjips, Eternal Tapestry)
Guardian Alien will be performing at this year’s Hopscotch Festival and will tour the US during August with an appearance at one of Thrill Jockey’s 20th anniversary shows in the fall
CD version comes in a 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package. LP version includes fully artworked inner sleeve and free download coupon. First 500 LPs are pressed on translucent gold vinyl, remaining copies on black
“Guardian Alien follow the road to enlightenment previously trod by the likes of Hawkwind and other space adventurers...[a] trance epic of guitars, synths, drums, and caterwauling vocals” - Free Music Archive
“Mr. Fox’s drumming was mesmerizing as usual, the rapid beats changing shape with pronounced and uneven kick-drum patterns...Bernard Gann played scrabbling electric-guitar leads...and Ms. Drewchin’s singing sounded completely impulsive, unprogrammed, free.” - The New York Times
“electronic and otherworldly textures tessellate against a vast and empty expanse, space gorged on those tremendous beats, guitars that squeal and slice like the bass of Lightning Bolt, and actual bass that hovers like a dark and curious cloud. There are wall-covering shrieks and militaristic repetition, head-down breakdowns and tangential rips.”
